Video: Sam Harris v William Lane Craig Debate “Is the Foundation of Morality Natural or Supernatural?”

April 9th, 2011 by Madeleine

Sam Harris and William Lane Craig debated the moot “Is the Foundation of Morality Natural or Supernatural?” at the University of Notre Dame on 7 April 2011. We’ve already linked to the debate  MP3 but here is the video of the whole debate.

  • Thanks for the H/T Maddy. Very cool that you made it into a playlist too. 🙂

  • I heard Justin Brierly of the Unbelievable? radio show say that Dave Parker emailed him and plugged MandM (I was listening to the debate between Paul Copan and Norman Bacrac today) so I was googling to work out if it was likely to be the Dave Parker who comments here sometimes or someone else. I found your blog and saw that the video of the Craig v Harris debate was out and got side-tracked…

  • Hmm, I have emailed with Justin a few times but I don’t think he was talking about me. I knew there was a textual critic of the New Testament named David Parker. Looks like there is another one as well!

  • There is a David Parker who is a member of parliament in New Zealand as well but I am pretty sure it was not him…
Have you ever emailed Brierly about the hyperbolic argument for the Canaanite issue and mentioned us in that context? That is what he said “Dave Parker” emailed him about.
When I googled “David Parker” I did see there was a David Parker who was a professor of theology and director of the centre for editing texts of religion at the University of Birmingham so I wondered if it was he who had emailed but he has never interacted with our blog (at least, not to my knowledge). Maybe Brierly saw your name and thought you were him?
Our next blog post which will be up in a few hours is a link to the podcast of the show in which said mention happens in so have a listen – the mention is around the 38 minute mark 🙂

  • I found that spot in the show and listened; actually surprised I didn’t notice the first time (it’s my name for goodness sake!).

I would be surprised if the Dave Parker he mentions is the text critic, but I suppose anything’s possible. It definitely wasn’t me. I think the last time I emailed Justin was a few months back when his podcast’s RSS feed was acting up.

I tried Googling the Stand to Reason website to see is anyone over there had commented with a nickname containing Parker. Didn’t turn anything up. This is a mystery indeed! There is another David Parker who reads the same blogs as me. Kind of eeeery!

  • I guess it remains a mystery then!

  • Mystery solved – it was Dave Parker of Canada apparently.

  • As much as Harris would like to paint Craig with the “Taliban” brush, there is only one debater sharing their “if you disagree with me, you’re reprehensible” ploy — and it isn’t Craig.
